New Seed Library Kick Off Events
Fun hands-on workshops are kicking off the new Seed Library location which will be available at Kaubisch Memorial Public Library beginning in March.
Seed Swap events are designed to help gardeners save money by sharing extra seeds and participants this year will learn how to grow more food in less space through a “planting by the foot” hands-on workshop. This themed workshop will be offered twice - participants are welcome to attend one or both sessions offered cooperatively by the Kaubisch Memorial Public Library, OSU Master Gardeners, and the Seneca Parks.
Seed Swap & “Planting By the Foot” garden planning workshops are scheduled for Saturday, February 28 at Fruth Wetland Nature Preserve in the Teach Nature Education Center and Saturday, March 28 at Kaubisch Memorial Public Library. Both Seed Swaps will be held from 10am to noon each day.
No registration is required for these free events. All experience levels are welcome—from first-time gardeners to seasoned growers looking to optimize their space or try something new.
How a seed swap works: Bring any labeled unused or partially used seed packets to share and take home new seeds to try. Attendees are not required to bring (or take) seeds to participate in these events.
The donated seeds will be placed into categories around the room while participants learn how to plan efficient, productive gardens using the “planting by the foot” (square-foot–style) method.
The program introduces simple garden planning techniques that divide growing space into one-foot sections, making it easy to determine plant spacing, maximize yields, reduce waste, and simplify maintenance. Participants can begin creating personalized garden layouts based on their available space, sunlight, and growing goals, whether they garden in raised beds, backyard plots, or containers.
Following the program, participants are encouraged to go around the room and select seeds to use to grow their new garden layouts.
The Kaubisch Memorial Public Library will add any extra seeds from these events to the newly created Seed Library. Stop by during normal hours of operation to donate seeds or select seeds to plant. The Seed Library will be open to the public to continue this community seed swapping opportunity throughout the year.
